history of EARTHRISE

The image on our home page is a digitally remastered version of earthrise, the first color image ever taken off Earth.

Earthrise was taken by astronaut Bill Anders on December 24, 1968, during the Apollo 8 mission, and helped inspire the modern environmental conservation movement.

Prior to earthrise

It’s hard to imagine that prior to Earthrise we had no idea what our planet actually looked like.

In fact, the closest example we had where illustrations similar to this one found on the cover of a science fiction magazine in 1953.

I think it’s fair to say that the Earth or blue marble as it’s become known, turned out to be much more beautiful.
